Hi reader! I hope you like my travel itinerary to Meghalaya all the way
from Delhi.
It started from Delhi Airport , I took a flight
to Shillong and reached Shillong in the Morning by 11:30 am.
Shillong>>Laitlum
Canyons>>Elephant Falls
Starting from a Taxi ride from Airport I went to Shillong's local market
and hired a 350CC Bike at a cost of 750/ Day. Started my journey at 1 PM from
shillong's city and went to Laitlum Canyons which is half an hour drive
from the city of Shillong.
Laitlum Canyons is a priceless gems bestowed in this region by nature.
Laitlum literally means ‘The End of Hills’ and the scenic beauty you enjoy here
justify the name given to it. One of the less popular tourist places in
Shillong. Laitlum Canyons is a perfect getaway spot if you are looking for cool
& solace place away from glittering & crowded town. Perched atop
serene hills of East Khasi, making this place quite popular among photographers
and trekkers.
Left from Laitlum Canyons for Elephant Falls at 3:30 and was there by
4:30. So it is an amazing Waterfall named after an elephant like rock at its
base , the elephant falls are the most popular water falls of north east
located next to Shillong.
The tourist paradise with 3 layer of water falls is accessible from
different view points. The first wide fall is hidden behind dense trees , the
second one is thin with turbulence & third one very wide clearly visible
flows like a thin milky sheet is simply mesmerizing. The elephant shaped stones
wash away with time & also got disintegrated due to earth quake. Awesome
place to spend time with family and friends.
Finally, the ends and I move towards a Home stay, which was not more
than 15 Minutes from Elephant falls in Khasi (forgot the name of the home stay
otherwise would have mentioned it), it was really cheap and costed me around 450
for a night including dinner and breakfast.
Khasi >>Double Decker Root Bridge>>Nohkalikai
falls >> Mawsmai caves
Day 2, I started early at 4:00am,
I left from Khasi to The double decker living root bridges which was appx. 55
Km form there and was covered within 3 hours. The double decker living root
bridges are two bridges stacked one above the other, located in Cherrapunjee.
This stacking is possible due to the entanglement of roots. It takes over 15
years for a root bridge to grow and develop as a strong bridge that can sustain
the weight of the people crossing it. The roots become stronger over the years.
Trekking down from Nongriate village to this place was bit rough. But when I reached here I really enjoyed the waters took a lot photos on the bridge which is naturally built. This is the unique, awesome, amazing place on this planet don't miss to see or visit.... It's manmade living roots bridge.
Next,
I was excited to visit the 4th highest waterfall in the world i.e. Nohkalikai
Falls which was an hour away from my current location and 5km from Cherrapunji
I started for Nohkalikai and reached within 1h25mins by 12 :30 PM I was there
and spent good time being there enjoying the sound of the waterfall. Didn't
Spend much time here, had lunch at a local restaurant and left for my next
destination which was mawsmai caves.
Located about 6 km from
Cherrapunji, Mawsmai cave is one of the main tourist attractions in the
Cherrapunji, which is credited as the wettest place on Earth. These magnificent
caves are formed out of limestone and are quite long and deep. However,
tourists can only cover 150 m inside it and the remaining caves are off-limit
for the visitors.

small. In one passage you need hands and feet. It is fun to do and see and yes,
do bring torches which I forgot as sometimes the floor is also a bit wet.
Leaving from Mawsmai Caves I went to a riverside campsite in Dawki which was 2h 30Mins away from my current location for a night stay and reached there by 8 PM when it was complete dark as the Sun sets at 6 in North East, So please try and be quick with your travel time and try to start your day as early as possible as the sun starts to rise somewhere at 4:30am .
